About Us

The Whetstone Family Foundation, established in 2023 by the Right Reverend Brent Whetstone and his wife Heather, is a charitable organization committed to fostering hope, health, and humanity through education, empathy, and opportunity. Rooted in their work as Anglican missionaries and grounded in their deep love for Appalachian Ohio, the Whetstones founded the foundation to address long-standing disparities in access to higher education—particularly for students pursuing careers in medicine and the arts.

Through years of service in rural churches and communities, the Whetstones saw firsthand the economic and educational barriers facing talented young people. They recognized that while potential was abundant, opportunity was not. Many promising students were forced to abandon their aspirations due to the financial burden of tuition, fees, and living expenses. In response, the Whetstone Family Foundation was born—an organization dedicated to investing in the lives and futures of Appalachian students.

In its inaugural year, the Foundation awarded scholarships to students at Bloomfield High School, with the first presentations led by Heather Whetstone. The foundation is funded through the personal contributions of Bishop Brent, Heather, and their five children, who have committed their own resources to the advancement of others.

We believe in the transformative power of education and the dignity of every learner. From rural clinics to classrooms, from hospital halls to concert stages, we are guided by the conviction that the future of Appalachia is bright—and that investing in students is the most powerful way to make the most of life.
