Scholarships

Do you know someone who needs help affording education?

​

The Whetstone Family Foundation Scholarship is now accepting applications from high school seniors who are either enrolling in or continuing their education at a college or university. This scholarship program is specifically designed to support students from our community who are pursuing academic degrees in the fields of medicine or the arts.

Scholarship Details

​

Eligibility:

  • Applicants: High school seniors who will be starting college or university and are residents of one of Ohio's 32 Appalachian Counties or a resident of Geauga County. 

  • Fields of Study: Students pursuing degrees in medicine, or the arts are encouraged to apply.

  • Reapplication: Students may reapply each year, provided they continue to meet the eligibility criteria.

Award Information:

  • Number of Scholarships: Multiple scholarships are awarded annually to deserving students.

  • Financial Support: The scholarships are intended to alleviate financial challenges and support students during their first year of college and beyond, helping to cover tuition, books, and other educational expenses.

Application Process:

  • Deadline: All applications must be submitted by April 30th 2025.

  • Required Materials: The application process involves submitting an application form, personal essays, and two letters of recommendation.

Writing Prompts:

  • Arts Major: Explore the vibrant and often overlooked artistic heritage of Appalachia. Imagine you are a historian tasked with documenting the unique ways that traditional and contemporary arts have shaped the culture of this region. Write an essay or narrative that delves into how local art forms—such as folk music, storytelling, visual arts, and crafts—reflect the history, values, and daily life of Appalachian communities. Consider the influence of these art forms on both local identity and broader cultural trends and discuss how they contribute to preserving and transforming Appalachian heritage in the modern world.

  • Medicine Major: Examine the current state of health literacy in Appalachia and its impact on community well-being. Write an essay or report that investigates the challenges faced by residents in accessing and understanding health information. Discuss how factors such as socioeconomic status, educational opportunities, and healthcare infrastructure contribute to the region’s health literacy rates. Include potential solutions and strategies that could improve health education and access and explore how enhancing health literacy could positively affect overall health outcomes in Appalachian communities.

Selection Criteria:

  • Academic Performance: The Foundation values potential and dedication to the fields of medicine and the arts. Therefore, we encourage all students regardless of GPA to apply

  • Personal Statements: Applicants are encouraged to share their goals, aspirations, and how the scholarship will impact their educational journey.

  • Letters of Recommendation: Strong endorsements from teachers, mentors, or community leaders who can speak to the applicant’s character and potential.

  • Selection Committee: The selection committee is made up of members of the Whetstone Family, as well as associates of the Whetstone Family Foundation.

  • Support Provided: The scholarship aims to ease the financial burden on students, enabling them to focus on their studies and transition smoothly into higher education.

  • Community Impact: By supporting students in these vital fields, the Foundation hopes to foster growth and innovation within the community and contribute to the advancement of both medicine and the arts.
